by Frank Wrabel

Beginning in 1925, PRR and B&O stepped up their train amenities to capture luxury service patrons travelling between Washington and Chicago. Their competition soon became a war that lasted 32 years, through the Depression, WWII, and the heady Postwar period. This book captures this story of the two railroads' optimism and final resignation to changing market demographics. Author Frank Wrabel tells the story of this glorious fight.
About 375 illustrations, many in color. Hardbound, Smyth sewn, 186 pages.

The High Line (April 2020)
MAILING TO MEMBERSHIP NOW

As we hunker down and social distance, its a great time to look forward to some cheer headed your way. "The High Line" is literally jumping off the press and into mailing envelopes this week!

Special gratitude and thanks to our talented contributor and editor Al Gianantonio.  Thank you for your dedication, talent and unending contribution to the Philadelphia Chapter!

The High Line Volume 32 for 2020 presents a first-hand history of the construction of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, the most fascinating part of the original Main Line of Public Works that connected Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.  The history is in the form of an address given to the Historical Society of
Pennsylvania in 1878 by one of the original engineers that helped design and construct the Portage Railroad beginning in 1834.

The issue also contains and illustrates the construction efforts of PRRT&HS member Ken Rideout in building his “Juniata Lines” HO Scale model railroad in his 25’ by 50’ basement which was transformed over many years into the PRR’s Altoona to Cresson main line in the 1949 to 1950 era.

An incident involving the Broadway Limited taking on water between Fort Wayne, Indiana and Crestline, Ohio is reported with some water scoop detail drawings.

And for the modeler, some unique pieces of PRR MOW equipment built right here in the West Chester, PA area by the Schramm Company which were used to maintain the steel right-of-way and which could be incorporated in any model railroad.

For those interested in the southern New Jersey area and beyond, the linear track chart for the PRSL’s main line is presented in full 1966 detail with photo illustrations along the way followed by a number of pages of “Pennsy Pictorial” presenting steam, electric, diesel and rolling stock images, both young, and old – some very old!

"The High Line" is mailing to all membership in April 2020.  If you are not currently a chapter member, Join Now and receive this edition while inventory lasts.
Chapter Meeting Cancellation (April 25, 2020)
The COVID-19 threat to public health in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and surrounding states remains low, but in recent days the number of positive cases has been on the rise.  To limit community transmission, the CDC has strongly recommended the cancellation of gatherings of more than 10 people for organizations that serve “higher-risk populations” (older adults or people with serious chronic medical conditions).
Based on current CDC COVID-19 guidance, The Philadelphia Chapter has canceled the April 25, 2020 chapter meeting. Should conditions change we will communicate an alternate date and of course resume meetings in the fall of 2020.

Please visit the chapters website (www.philaprrths.com) and/or subscribe to eNews for additional information and updates relevant to The Philadelphia Chapter operations.

Thank you for your cooperation and stay well,

The Philadelphia Chapter Board of Directors
PRRTHS ANNUAL MEETING - CANCELLATION (MAY 13-16, 2020)
To all PRR T&HS members:

It is with great sadness the I have to inform all our members that the PRR T&HS Annual Meeting planned for May 13-16 2020 has been cancelled.  The annual meeting hotel, The Penn Stater has contacted everyone who have already made their reservations, that they have been cancelled.

Everyone who already sent in their registration forms, will have their original checks returned by the registration committee as soon as they are able.  Please be patient.

I had high hopes that by mid-April that this situation might be better, and by May we could return to some normality, but that is not to be the case, at least at this writing.

According to our by-laws we are required to have some form of annual meeting, and the possibility of meeting later in the year will be looked into.

We do have society business to take care of regardless.  We have two board positions that need to be voted on, along with two majority vote questions concerning two of our chapters.  We will be putting a letter together to be sent out to all current members, along with a self-addressed, stamped post card for you to “check off” and return.  Your participation is important, just like being at the regular general membership meeting.

For now, the best thing that we can all do is “stay safe and well”.  Please follow all the recommendations to protect yourselves, and God willing, we will all be together very soon.

Steve Staffieri
President PRR T&HS

Chapter Meeting - February 15, 2020
FEATURE PRESENTATION:  "Continuing a Legacy - Photographing the Pennsylvania Railroad"

Photographer Michael Froio will present a talk about the legacy of imagery left behind by the Pennsylvania Railroad and how this visual ephemera ties into his methodology of interpreting the surviving infrastructure and landscape along the former Pennsylvania Railroad, making contemporary views inspired by historical materials.
